About the work

Mali: Conflicted (2024) is part of Linda Burris Webster's Cartographica series, in which maps are transformed into intricate sculptural forms before being photographed.

Beginning with a map of Mali, Linda creates a collection of folded and distorted forms that reflect the overlapping conflicts affecting the West African nation. The fragmented composition evokes a sense of instability and uncertainty, drawing attention to the experiences of people living amid political upheaval, violence and displacement.

By photographing the sculpture against a black background, Linda returns the map to a two-dimensional image, concealing aspects of its physical construction. This becomes a metaphor for the personal stories and human experiences so often overlooked when countries are reduced to geographical boundaries or international headlines.
