About the work
Overlay explores Christina Fedyk’s interest in layering, repetition and the relationship between structure and spontaneous mark-making.
Built through layers of monoprint and mixed media, the surface carries the traces of repeated printing, removal and reworking. Blocks and fragments overlap across the ground, creating a dense surface in which earlier stages remain partially visible.
Against this sits a strong, almost calligraphic black form. Its scale and simplicity contrast with the complexity beneath, appearing simultaneously drawn over the surface and embedded within it.
The tension between the two gives Overlay its character. A single assertive gesture sits against an accumulated history of quieter marks, bringing together immediacy and process within the same image.
