Book of Stones reflects Michael Rainsford’s ongoing engagement with landscape, approached through material rather than depiction.

Working with watercolour on handmade paper, the surface is built through repeated, small marks that gather into shifting fields of tone. These marks sit lightly within the paper, allowing the texture and absorbency of the surface to remain present.

The composition unfolds in sections, each carrying a subtle variation in colour and density. What appears ordered at first begins to loosen on closer viewing, as small inconsistencies and shifts give the work a quiet movement.

There is a sense of accumulation rather than construction. The marks feel placed over time, building a surface that holds memory of process and place without describing it directly.
